Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

It is safe to say that the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge was an overwhelming success.  From the ribbon cutting ceremony featuring George Lucas, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford to the first visitors who were lined up for hours waiting to get their first look at Batuu, the reception to the newest themed land has been overwhelmingly positive.

If you followed the social media accounts of those fortunate enough to be part of the opening, the most common sentiment shared was how detailed and immersive Galaxy’s Edge is.  From all accounts, not a single detail was overlooked in the creation of Disneyland’s newest themed land.  Even the Coca Cola products sold inside Galaxy’s Edge come in their own themed bottle and font.

Ahead of the opening of Galaxy’s Edge, the management team at Disneyland decided that entry to Galaxy’s Edge would be limited and based upon a reservation system for the first three (3) weeks of the land’s opening.  This decision, though it may have disappointed some, was absolutely correct.  The wait times for the land’s only ride, Smuggler’s Run, has averaged between 25-45 minutes since the land’s opening — amazing when you consider that Radiator Springs over in Car’s Land is routinely between 60-100 minutes.  The limited crowds also help to work out any kinks or bugs that are always likely to arise whenever a new attraction opens.  We truly hope this is something the team over at Walt Disney World will consider when Galaxy’s Edge comes to Hollywood Studios in August.

To the extent their are any “negatives” at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, it might be the prices.  Cocktails (yes, alcohol is now being sold INSIDE Disneyland) will run you $15.  A custom lightsaber will run you, get ready, $200.  The custom droid option, however, seems quite reasonable at $99.  If you are planning on visiting Galaxy’s Edge, make sure you pack a little extra in your wallet as the experience does not come cheap.

The infusion of Galaxy’s Edge into both Disneyland and Hollywood Studios will almost surely bring a new generation of fans to both parks.  The investment that the Walt Disney Company has made in Galaxy’s Edge will undoubtedly pay off and set a new standard for theme park attractions.
