After the Endgame

After scoring an opening weekend haul of $1.2 billion, it’s safe to say that if you are here reading this, you have seen Avengers: Endgame.  The dramatic conclusion to the Avengers arc which began back in 2008 with Iron Man has dominated news and social media cycles for the past week.

So how did we feel about the film?  Well if you want to stay safe from any SPOILERS, do not cross past Tony Stark.  If you saw Endgame and want to check it out, read below.

OK, so if you are here it means you’ve seen Endgame and and nothing shall be spoiled.  The thrilling conclusion to the Avengers arc did not disappoint.  The three (3) hour spectacle kept you glued to your seat from the very first scene where we see Tony Stark and Nebula drifting through space as Tony records what he believes to be a final message to Pepper.  Nebula props Tony up for what may have been his final moments alive - that is until Captain Marvel appears to carry the ship back to Earth.  And with that, the first Avenger (in the MCU) and the latest Avenger are united with Black Widow, Thor, Hulk, and Captain America.

The movie did a phenomenal job of bringing back stories and characters from older MCU films.  We see Loki and the Avengers from 2012.  We see Thor return to Asgard where he reunites with his mother Frigga while Rocket removes the aether from Jane Foster.  Thor also brings back Mjolnir back to the present with him.  We also see Tony share the sentimental moment with his father, Howard Stark, that he longed for his entire life.

One of the biggest questions heading into the film wasn’t whether the Avengers would prevail - given that sequels for Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Black Panther have already been announced - it was all but certain that Thanos would be defeated.  Instead, fans pondered and speculated who would live and who would die (or remain dead from Infinity War).

The biggest lost was arguably the most popular Avenger in the MCU:  Tony Stark/Iron Man.  The man who launched this entire work back in 2008 sacrificed himself in order to vanquish Thanos and the Children of Thanos once and for all.  In doing so, Tony assumed the Infinity Gauntlet (fitted to his suit) and snapped his fingers.

Prior to that, we saw another veteran of the MCU, Black Widow, sacrifice herself so that Hawkeye could recover the soul stone.  As the Red Skull told both Hawkeye and Thanos before him, you have to trade a soul for a soul.  And with her fatal fall, fans said goodbye to Natalya.

We also learned that Vision would not be returning following his death in Infinity War.  And while Loki met his demise in Infinity War at the hands of Thanos, he has seemingly created an alternate timeline where he will continue to exist having stolen the tesseract and escaping in the 2012 reality.

So does Avengers: Endgame live up to the hype?  Yes - it absolutely does.  The film was action-packed from start to finish.  The film tied up a lot of loose ends and gave Marvel fans a final run down memory lane.

Did we love the ending?  Not especially.  TheWrap.com does a nice job explaining why the ending just doesn't work.  The MCU went out of their way to make it clear that Captain America was the leader and the true "hero" of the group.  Remember Civil War?  In comic canon, Captain America dies and "Team Iron Man" prevails.  The MCU dramatically changes that ending by making it clear that Cap's position is morally superior and that he is the true leader of the Avengers.

Given that, it should have been Captain America who snapped his fingers, vanquished Thanos, and died on the field of battle.  Instead it was Tony Stark, who left behind his wife and young daughter and made the ultimate sacrifice.

And how does Steve Rogers, the most humble of all the Avengers, end his run in the MCU?  By using time travel to return the Infinity Stones (noble) and then relive his life by marrying Peggy and dying an old man (both selfish and a huge disruption to the timeline).  The ending was not fitting for the aura created for Captain America by Marvel Studios.

Despite the ending, Avengers:Endgame was an absolute cinematic triumph.  The Russo Bros took the seeds planed by Jon Favreau and Joss Whedon and produced a climax worthy of the critical praise and box office success it has received.
