Fun Facts: Expedition Everest

Walt Disney parks tend to get a bad reputation for lacking “thrill” rides.  When Dads tell their single friends that they are vacationing at Disney World, they typically hear something along the lines of “Oh that’s not going to be fun for you.”  Or “what are you going to do?”  And while Disney may not boast the giga coasters and strata coasters that a park such as Cedar Point may have, it is incorrect to assume that Disney does not feature rides that will get your heart racing.

For all of the naysayers, see Expedition Everest.

Constructed at an estimated cost of $100,000,000, Everest combines the elements of a thrill ride and roller coaster with the detail and storytelling fans have come to expect from Disney.  Located in the “Asia” land of Animal Kingdom park, Everest cranks you up to the top of the world’s largest mountain where you encounter a broken track and a monstrous Yeti.  You’re momentarily stunned to see the track completely maligned by the snow monster and find your cart speeding backwards (a feature not found on many “traditional” roller coasters).  As with most rides inside the Disney parks, even the queue tells a story of mountain climbers and a lost expedition.  Everest is the 4th "Mountain" attraction inside the Walt Disney World Resort and also stands as the tallest.

Even though the ride is 12 years old, it remains one of the park’s busiest attractions which is why securing a Fast Pass for your visit is essential.  If you are unable to secure a Fast Pass for the day or if you simply want to ride Expedition Everest again, the single rider line is available and typically provides for much quicker wait times.

The ride is probably too intense for younger riders.  You have to be at least 44” to ride Everest but parents should exercise caution before throwing their child on.  For everyone else, Everest is a blast and a must-see attraction when heading to Disney’s Animal Kingdom park.
