Fun Facts: Cinderella’s Castle

A new feature on the blog will be to highlight some fun facts about various Disney attractions.  Disneyphiles will probably know a lot of these while the more casual observer might learn one or two tidbits about their favorite spots.

We kick this segment off with the centerpiece of Walt Disney World:  Cinderella’s Castle.  Whether through television commercials, online ads, or any other marketing materials, WDW always highlights Cinderella’s Castle.  It is prominently featured on in-park merchandise and serves as the central “hub” of the Magic Kingdom’s lands.  At 189 feet tall, it is the second tallest structure at WDW (Tower of Terror at Disney Hollywood Studios is 10 feet taller).

While the castle isn’t a ride per se, it does have a few features that guest can visit during their excursion to the Magic Kingdom.  There are two areas of the castle that are regularly open to guests:

  • The Royal Table:  This dining experience brings you face to face with some of your favorite Disney princesses depending on whether you enjoy a breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  You can get out of the hot lines and sit down for an immersive dining experience.
  • Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique:  This is a little girl’s dream come true:  transforming into a real life princess.  Hair, makeup, and a new dress all are all part of this experience.
While both Royal Table and Bibbidi Bobbidi are open to everyone - reservations are a must.  Make sure you book several months prior to your visit.  Cinderella’s Castle also as a suite for overnight visits but it is only available during special promotions and contents run by Disney.

Unlike it’s predecessor castle at Disneyland in California, Cinderella’s Castle does not feature a drawbridge (the drawbridge was later removed from Sleeping Beauty’s Castle in Anaheim).  The castle does have a moat surrounded by lush landscaping.

The castle is also the centerpiece of many shows throughout the course of the day.  Most notably, it serves as the backdrop of the nighttime fireworks display “Happily Ever After.”  While fireworks light up the night sky, the castle serves as the backdrop to high-definition lasers which depict scenes and characters from your favorite Disney movies.

Cinderella’s Castle is visible from several rides in the park including Seven Dwarfs Mine Ride, Splash Mountain, and Barnstormer.  As it sits in the of the Magic Kingdom, it helps guests to find their bearings when hopping from one land to another.  We would say that it’s a must visit, it’s virtually impossible to spend any amount of time inside the Magic Kingdom without coming across the castle.
